German Shepherds are the working dogs of Indian homes — farmhouses in Punjab, independent houses in Hyderabad, apartments everywhere — and they arrive in summer carrying an undercoat thick enough to hide a finger in. Long-coat GSDs have the added problem of feathering behind the ears and legs that mats quietly. Grooming a Shepherd well is mostly about patience and airflow: getting a high-velocity dryer down to the skin and pulling out several kilos of dead wool without touching the guard coat that protects him.

A Shepherd in full blow sheds in visible tufts that lift off the body when you run a hand through. Left in place, that wool packs into a felted layer over the hips and rump that water cannot penetrate and air cannot move through.
The trousers on the back legs and the area under the tail are the densest part of the coat and the most neglected. In humid weather this is where we most often find damp, compacted undercoat and, in long-coat lines, genuine mats.
Shepherds are frequently outdoor or garden dogs in India, and the thick ruff around the neck plus the folds at the ear base give ticks perfect cover. A tick here can feed unnoticed through several days of normal petting.
The harsh outer coat holds fine dust close to the skin, especially in drier northern and western cities. One quick lather rarely gets down to it, which is why a Shepherd usually needs two shampoo passes and a long rinse.
A 35-kilo dog who dislikes restraint needs an unhurried groomer and a familiar room. This is exactly where home grooming beats a salon — no car ride, no strange dogs barking, no waiting in a crate.
