A Cocker Spaniel is essentially a medium-maintenance dog wearing high-maintenance ears. The silky feathering on the ear leathers, chest, belly and legs is the whole grooming story: it grows long, mats at the base, drags through whatever the dog walks over and takes forever to dry. In Indian monsoon months a Cocker's belly feathering can pick up mud on every single walk, and those long ears hang into the food bowl at every meal.

Long, heavy, densely feathered ear leathers seal the canal off from air and trail through food and water. The hair on and around them mats readily and needs thinning and tidying at every groom. Anything beyond cleaning the visible flap — smell, discharge, head shaking — is a vet matter.
The furnishings on the underside are the lowest-hanging part of the dog and the first to soak up wet mud. Left damp and knotted they felt into the coat quickly, which is why many Indian pet parents keep the belly feathering trimmed shorter than the breed standard look.
Unlike a Labrador, a Cocker has a shape that has to be maintained — the topline blended, the feet tidied, the ear fringe thinned, the sanitary area kept short. Skip it for three months and you have a shapeless, matted dog rather than a slightly shaggy one.
Cockers tend to have oily skin, which in humid weather means the coat gets greasy and smells sooner than you would expect. They usually need a clarifying shampoo and a second lather rather than a single quick wash.
The hair between and around the pads grows thickly and holds grit, mud and grass seed. Trimmed at every session, it makes a visible difference to how clean the dog stays.
