A Maine Coon is a large cat with a coat designed for New England winters, being kept in a country where the ambient temperature is usually above thirty degrees. The coat is shaggy rather than silky, longer over the britches, belly and tail than across the shoulders, and slightly water-resistant, which means it resists shampoo going in and water coming out. Add the sheer size of the animal — a big Coon needs two hands and real strength to hold safely — and this becomes the most physically demanding cat groom we do.

The shoulders stay short and tidy while the belly, britches and tail carry far more coat, and that is where mats form. Owners who brush the back and stop never touch the areas that actually need it.
A Maine Coon's tail is its signature and a magnet for tangles, litter and debris. It needs gentle combing along its length, worked from the tip towards the base rather than yanked through.
A six-kilo cat that objects is a serious handful, and cats cannot be restrained the way dogs can. Sessions are built around short stretches, frequent repositioning and stopping before the cat escalates.
Coons genuinely feel the heat here. The right response is removing dead coat so air circulates, plus cool floors, shade and water — and for persistently matting cats, a shorter summer clip is a reasonable option since cat coat regrows normally.
The tufts between the toes and on the ear tips are part of the breed's look and they catch litter, dust and debris. Keeping the paw tufts trimmed level with the pads makes a real difference to what gets tracked around the house.
