The Persian is the most grooming-dependent cat in India, and the two reasons are its coat and its face. The coat is long, fine and backed by a dense undercoat that felts against the skin within days if it is not combed — and unlike a dog, a matted cat will keep grooming at the mat with a rough tongue and make it worse. The flat, brachycephalic face means the tear ducts are shortened, so moisture runs down the face instead of draining, wetting the hair below the eyes all day long.

Armpits, the ruff, the belly, the britches behind the hind legs and around the tail base are where Persian coat felts. A cat with a solid mat is genuinely uncomfortable, and because cats hide discomfort, it is usually well established before anyone notices.
The short muzzle and altered tear drainage mean the hair under the eyes stays damp and stains reddish-brown. The grooming answer is daily gentle wiping and drying, and keeping that hair trimmed short. Persistent heavy discharge, squinting or a cloudy eye is a vet visit.
A Persian self-grooming a long coat swallows a lot of hair. Regular professional de-shedding removes loose coat before the cat ingests it, which is one of the most useful and least obvious benefits of grooming a longhaired cat.
Long hair around the rear catches litter and faeces, which is unpleasant for everyone and genuinely hard for a flat-faced cat to clean itself. A sanitary trim at each session solves a problem most owners are too polite to mention.
Cats do not travel well and do not recover quickly from a frightening salon visit. A short, quiet, low-restraint session at home in a familiar room is not a luxury for this species — it is the difference between a cat that tolerates grooming and one that never will again.
