Chennai humidity also does something specific to long coats: damp fur felts far faster than dry fur, so a Persian who looked fine a fortnight ago can have tight mats in the armpits and behind the ears by the next visit. Most Chennai cat parents we meet have never used a groomer before, and the first conversation is usually about what will not happen. No scruffing, no restraint bag, no closed room she cannot leave, and no finishing the checklist for the sake of it. Practically, our busiest cat areas are the apartment belts of Velachery, Anna Nagar and the OMR corridor through Sholinganallur, along with older homes in Adyar and T Nagar where semi-outdoor cats pick up grime and the occasional tick. Humidity is the technical problem in all of them. A Chennai long-hair needs combing right down to the skin every few weeks, and where mats have already felted flat we clip them out with a guarded blade instead of pulling on skin that is often already irritated underneath.

- What happens if my cat refuses to cooperate midway through the session?
- We stop. A Chennai cat session is built in short blocks with breaks, and if your cat has genuinely had enough, the groomer finishes what is safe, tells you what is still pending and suggests a follow-up. Forcing a cat to complete a groom buys one clean coat and a cat who fights every session after that.
